FPA 883 MFA Studio

FPA 883 Studio in FPA I (2013-3)

Bartlett Space – Alexander Centre studios Wednesday 9:30-12:20

Instructor: Judy Radul, jradul at sfu.ca

This graduate studio course is for students in the first year of the MFA program. The course focuses on the research, creation and presentation of individual artistic works and discussion of these among the cohort. Participants engage in ongoing clarification of the aims and interests of their artistic practice and working methodologies. As well, the class will investigate art works and models of creation through discussion of relevant works of contemporary art and occasional participation by guest artists from the community and SCA faculty. The cohort, by the nature of our program, is interdisciplinary.

At the beginning of the semester, each student will choose from two available options:

  • option 1. To create one major work during the entire fall semester for presentation/class critique three times during its process. This work may undergo substantial revision from conception to realization. Among other things, this option allows for detailed examination of artistic process.
  • option 2: To create three short-study works (each with different subjects, goals or media), with each work receiving one class critique upon completion. These short studies may form the basis of future work. Among other things, this option allows for multiple investigations and short turnarounds from conception to realization, a good choice if your goal is to challenge and transform aspects of your practice.

A schedule for class critiques and individual deadlines will be determined at the beginning of the semester. Each student’s individual artistic concerns will govern the methods, materials and modes of presentation. Class critiques will spring from the urgency and immediacy of the work as well as from contemporary theoretical concerns. Artistic work will be discussed in terms of its content, context, materials, form, invention, vocabulary, technique and conceptual approach.

Grading:

  • option 1: one major work with three critiques 70%
  • option 2: three short study works with one critique each 70%

Participation 30%

Schedule:

Sept 4: Alexander Studio Basics with Andrew Curtis

Sept 11: Presentations concerning your work and artistic references:

Curtis Grahauer,Kyla Gardiner,Megan Stewart, Barbara Adler, Jaime Williams,

-be about 15 mins in terms of your work, and 10 mins in terms of your artistic references.

-give a sense of your work, it is up to you if this is past work, or future work, ultimately it is great if you can give a little info on both

-this isn’t an ‘advertisement’ for your success, we are interested to see what you have done, but also to hear you reflect critically on it.

-what I mean by your artistic “references” is NOT necessarily  those artists that have influenced you, or “inspired” you, but rather, what artists do you think your fellow students and I need to know a little about to understand your work, particularly your future work. These references are to start to build a framework for discussion. In the case of durational works (music, video etc) you will have to likely just play a short selection. In the past years people have made image slide shows, and /or a playlist of video or audio clips. If you can organize these in a way that you can put them on the web. (perhaps even on our MFA blog) then your classmates can refer to them later and listen to and watch the full selection.
